From Angels Camp you can also take a drive up scenic Highway 4 to Murphys, Arnold, or to Alpine County and the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.

Angels Camp was named after Henry Angel who started a trading post in 1848. Upon discovery of gold, soon over 4,000 miners were working the placer claims. This source of gold played out quickly and hard rock mining began. Now the town is honeycombed with tunnels from the many successful mines.

Today it is a quaint town where much of its historic charm remains. Take a walk along the streets and explore the unique shops, galleries, restaurants, museums and much more. The Angels Camp Museum is filled with historic artifacts from the Gold Rush era and several fascinating outdoor exhibits, including a collection of mining equipment, a blacksmith's shop and a unique carriage house.

In 1864, Mark Twain wrote his first successful short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and Angels Camp became linked with frogs for all time.

The Jumping Frog Jubilee and Calaveras County Fair is held annually the third week in May at “ Frog Town”.
